Chamonix-Mont-Blanc Minibus Hire
Chamonix sits at the foot of Mont Blanc, and getting there is part of the trip. A minibus with a driver handles the climb from Geneva, the winter equipment and the tunnel rules while you watch the peaks come into view.
The road up
Genève Aéroport is about 90 km away, roughly an hour and a half in light traffic; Lyon-Saint Exupéry is about 216 km. The last stretch is the tolled A40 Autoroute Blanche, followed by the Route Blanche into the valley. Mountain roads are slower than the map suggests, so leave a margin.
From 1 November to 31 March, all vehicles in Haute-Savoie must carry chains or snow socks, or have four 3PMSF winter tyres. Give us your travel dates and the vehicle is equipped for the season.

Parking and getting about
Coaches are sent to the Parking autocars du Grépon, at the town entrance on the Route Blanche, open every day of the year. From there the centre is a ten-minute walk, or hop on the free Mulet shuttle; no car park sits closer to the Aiguille du Midi cable car.
No official coach set-down is published at the Aiguille du Midi or at the Montenvers train, so your driver confirms where the group gets out.
Flying in to Chamonix-Mont-Blanc
- Aéroport Lyon-Saint Exupéry (LYS)
- Genève Aéroport (Geneva, across the border in Switzerland) (GVA)
Places your group will love in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc
- UTMB Mont-Blanc — Trail-running event week in late August; the town and roads are very busy
- Chamonix town centre — Alpine resort town at the foot of Mont Blanc
- Tramway du Mont-Blanc — Rack railway from Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet; it reaches the Nid d'Aigle (2,412 m) in summer only; booking is required
- Montenvers train and the Mer de Glace — Rack railway from Chamonix (1,035 m) to Montenvers (1,913 m) in about 20 minutes; no reservation system for the train; about 170 steps down to the ice cave; closed each autumn for maintenance
- Aiguille du Midi cable car — Cable car from Chamonix to the Aiguille du Midi; booking a date and departure time is compulsory, and groups of 20 or more book through the operator's professional service
Where groups tend to stay
- Saint-Gervais-les-Bains and Megève for larger groups
- Les Houches (down the valley)
- Les Praz and Argentière (up the valley)
- Chamonix Sud (near the Aiguille du Midi cable car)
- Chamonix town centre
Booking the big sights
You cannot simply turn up for the Aiguille du Midi: a date and departure time must be booked, and parties of 20 or more go through the operator's professional booking service. Fix that slot first; the rest of the day fits around it.
The Montenvers rack railway climbs to 1,913 m in about 20 minutes and takes no reservations. Allow for about 170 steps down to the ice cave, and note that it closes each autumn for maintenance. The Tramway du Mont-Blanc needs booking too, and only climbs as far as the Nid d'Aigle in summer.
Through the tunnel to Italy
Italy is close: through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, Courmayeur is roughly half an hour from town. Vehicles over 3.5 t must be Euro 3 or newer, and they are checked at Passy-Le Fayet before entering. In the tunnel you travel at 50 to 70 km/h, 150 m behind the vehicle ahead, with no overtaking. The tunnel also closes for maintenance at times, so look at the closures calendar before you plan the day.
Your questions, answered
Is UTMB week a good time to visit?
UTMB Mont-Blanc fills the town in late August, and the roads are very busy. If you come then, allow extra time for every transfer.
Can we add a stop in Switzerland?
Martigny is about 50 minutes away. Any foreign-registered coach or bus heavier than 3.5 t pays a Swiss heavy vehicle charge in advance for each day there, so flag any Swiss leg early.
How long can the driver work on an Alpine day?
EU rules allow 9 hours' driving a day, or 10 twice a week, with a break of at least 45 minutes after 4.5 hours at the wheel. Courmayeur and back sits well inside that; an airport run plus sightseeing needs more planning.
