Aix-en-Provence by Minibus: Cézanne and the Luberon

Aix is a small, graceful city with Cézanne at every turn, close to the Luberon, the Montagne Sainte-Victoire and the lavender of Valensole. A minibus party is just the size that Aix's museums like best.

Museums made for small groups

The Atelier de Cézanne requires booking and takes groups of at most 20, with leisure groups needing at least 15. The Hôtel de Caumont asks groups of 15 or more to book, and the Musée Granet caps groups at 25 including the guide.

A party of fifteen in one minibus fits all three neatly. A larger family can split in two and swap over at lunch.

Dropping off near the Cours Mirabeau

Much of the old town is pedestrian, so a group steps out at its edge. One set-down area sits behind the Aix Centre bus station (gare routière), where boulevard Victor Coq ends at a roundabout. From there, the plane trees and fountains of the Cours Mirabeau are a few minutes away.

Arriving by cruise ship

Lavender, villages and the sea

The Plateau de Valensole flowers from June to July, about an hour away. Lourmarin is about 40 minutes, Roussillon and Gordes roughly 75 minutes. Les Baux-de-Provence and Arles are about an hour west, and Cassis with its Calanques about 45 minutes south.

Local wines carry the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence appellation, and a tasting stop slips easily into any of these routes.

Arriving and air quality

Aix has no ZFE in October 2026; within the Métropole, the only one is in central Marseille. On pollution days the préfecture can restrict traffic by Crit'Air sticker, so ask for a vehicle that carries one. The TGV station lies some 13 km outside the centre, the town-centre station has regional trains from Marseille, and Marseille Provence airport is about 27 km away.

Your questions, answered

Is the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence a good time to visit?

It is held in July, with the Grand Théâtre de Provence among its main venues. Book transport and evening pick-ups early.

Easily. It is about 31 km away, around 35 minutes in light traffic.

Where can we see the Montagne Sainte-Victoire?

It rises east of the city, the mountain Cézanne painted so often, and a short drive out brings the familiar view into sight.

Which motorways serve Aix?

The A8 towards Nice, the A51 towards Marseille and the Alps, and the A7 towards Avignon via the A8. The A8 and A7 have tolled sections.
