Villefranche by Tender, the Riviera by Minibus
At Villefranche-sur-Mer the ship anchors in the bay and you come ashore by tender, landing at Port de la Santé in the heart of the village. Landing times shift with the boats, so a good plan here starts from the tender rather than the clock.
Meeting on the quay
Passengers step off at a gare maritime and landing quay inside a security zone. On a call day the harbour office opens as the first ship drops anchor and closes once that ship sails again.
Boats run in waves, and families rarely all land together. Agree a meeting point near the landing with the driver, give the ship's name, and let one person in the party keep the booking on their phone.

Riviera stops at your own pace
Nice is close: some 7 km to Place Masséna, around a quarter of an hour on clear roads. Monaco is about 15 km off, nearer 25 minutes. Èze has a village car park on Place du Général de Gaulle, and at Saint-Paul-de-Vence coaches must use the car park on chemin des Trious, about ten minutes' walk from the pedestrian centre.
Monaco needs a little homework. If your party numbers 20 or more, the Prince's Palace expects a booking, and so does the Musée océanographique. Only vehicles with Monaco or Alpes-Maritimes registration may climb to Monaco-Ville on its rock, so groups usually leave the vehicle at the Parking des Pêcheurs, beneath the museum, and walk up.
The cruise terminals
- The port is run directly by the Département des Alpes-Maritimes
- Two mooring buoys of the French Navy in the bay are used for cruise ship calls
- Gare maritime and a landing quay inside a security zone at Port de la Santé, in the centre of Villefranche-sur-Mer
- Tender port: cruise ships anchor in the bay and passengers come ashore by tender
Why a smaller vehicle helps in Nice
Without a waiver, the Promenade des Anglais is off limits to tourist coaches, and Nice's low-emission zone is aimed at coaches and heavy vehicles. A minibus for eight to sixteen people copes better with narrow village lanes along the coast, and the operator confirms which of these rules apply to the vehicle you book.
Your questions, answered
Could we simply take the train?
You could: Villefranche-sur-Mer station is a short walk from the landing quay. A minibus is worth it when the party includes slower walkers, or wants three or four stops in one day.
What if our tender lands late?
Tell the driver as soon as you know. Your booking sets the waiting time, and the day's stops can be trimmed so you return with time in hand.
Can we finish at Nice airport instead of the ship?
If you are leaving the cruise, yes. Nice Côte d'Azur is about 15 km from the port, around 30 minutes in light traffic.
How early should we plan to be back?
Allow for the queue at the tenders as well as the coast road. Aim to reach the quay comfortably before the last boat the cruise line lists.
